They started out as simple as basically the reloading dies that you have, even the handhold hammer type, if you've ever seen those, the older ones. uh... we want from that as actually the industrial base up to the man manufacturing that you see today and most of most not all but if you look at if you go to these cartridges companies and bullet companies for making jackets you know that most of the machinery was built and that they're running on a lot of it is built brown nineteen ten or pre-world war one and or during world war one The base machinery has been around that long, which I've always asked, I said, well, who made this? And here's the problem. Can we make this today? If we did, we'd have to do it modular in components because the casting for some of this stuff are massive. Okay. So when you do a compression slash a squeeze guy, it takes so many steps and you end up with a piece of brass the way you see it. And in fact, when you look at it initially go, how the hell did they make that happen? That doesn't, you have to work your brain around it. Cause it's like, Well, they take this plug and they stretch it out and turn it into the case. They do a certain amount of work on the outside. There's tooling being done in the process. But it's all squeezing, compression, and extrusion. You're stretching the material. Okay? Now think about this. If we go with a, what is basically a bar feed, if you're not familiar with this, go look up screw machines, nail machines. they have either a call stock or a street rod stock that being fed into a machine which then does everything you see that make that bolder dot a bolder it well forgive me mostly both were talking about here a bolt machine all there is the this the thing that make the machine that actually makes up uh... not yet there are three or four different ways that can be done industrially right now they're already being better have been done over the last two hundred years or so uh... the meeting about this is that we could run the piece of brass rod or aluminum rod or steel mild steel not not hard steel or not worry about trying to make this bill we could but we don't want to for regional understand minute we want to use a malleable metal now one of the tricks to this is that you could be we're going to take a piece of stock you're going to bore out the inside straight you're going to create the lip if it's a rimfire or you're going to be made milling the uh... the uh... extractor crew and of course you still got a good group you're going to a punch you're going to screw up punch slash drill through for the primer pocket okay what's fascinating about this is that making the straight cases this is where uh... any of your street cases forty five seventy could be done this way uh... thirty special three fifty seven forty smith and wesson nine millimeter forty five a c p here's what interesting if we were to go to spec and do the brass, build the brass this way, or aluminum, or pop metal steel, and the pop metal steel would really be the best choice for a lot of what we're talking about. You could still run it, you could make it a hair short. We'd have to experiment on this one, because I haven't done it this way yet, but we could make it a hair short and run it through a finalizer die, basically any standard die like you have from RCBS, whatever, and stretch out the case with a final stroke on the throat end, one last time which we do not going to be doing a whole case five shoot or did it would hurt it it would be a bad thing to do anyway what you want to do though is be able to stretch the top of that case so you film the wall out so it becomes more you need to more readily up compatible with standard, you know, bullet dimensions, etc. Because there's a couple of tricks you can do if you leave it thick wall, but we're not going to do that. We want to stretch it out. If we can't stretch it with a die, and we don't have the dies, or we don't have the time, we are going to dial up the amount of material we bore away from the inside as we move down the case, but only so far, and then we're going to back the dimension off and make the case thick wall. Thicker wall, not thick wall. why am I going to do this guys I could reuse this is a very good one say I've got all that boxer prime to burden prime demo that you have the boxers quickly reloadable the backboard and is not but that your battlefield panel We should be trying to pick it up. I could say that religiously for 30 years and most people it went right in one ear up the other and they won't remember until you have some drill sergeant or a unit commander or somebody you know, shoving it back in people's ears in the field and even then people will be lazy. People are notoriously lazy, people will not listen, and they are notoriously lazy. People are horribly lazy. that's what you got overcome especially with this generation but it's worse with a lot of other people because while i'm above that well you know what dipshit that's why you're going to end up without ammunition well okay with what with that so anyway bottom line is that we want to produce the brass so that we could use this for our training and or even just for security brass uh... we don't need to use this for field use but it would easily be acceptable be a superior If it was recovered, example, if I were sending shooters out to deal with a problem, let's say that we were sending, they're out hunt 24-7, we give them targets, they go out, they hunt the targets, they engage them. If they're using revolvers, which would be a good choice, leave no brass, even the bullets are questionable because there's a number of things we can do to distort them when they leave the tube, before they leave the tube, so that there's no way to identify where they really did come from. The fact of the matter is that that brass could be reused indefinitely. there it would be like a second chamber inside a chamber which it is you know brass cases aluminum cases mild steel cases are all chambers you know a chamber inside a chamber the chamber of the barrel is then of course added to and it's reinforced with the materials the way that the cartridges designed to create the final active chamber where everything goes on And then it's ejected and a new internal second tier chamber comes in, a cartridge, load a cartridge, we go through the whole process again. Now the big advantage is, again for straight case, step cases and all of that, guys you gotta think about what it takes to get that accomplished. And again, in the later two steps, we're typically your shoulder and the throat work are done with step cases. So where this really comes in is with our light. and well, any weight, straight case design, which lends us towards looking at if we go with a new, unique cartridge for say the AR-15, we would be better off going with a straight case 556 type round. In other words, a 556 case dimension, you know, in terms of base diameter for the whole of the case, because remember it's relatively straight, okay? It's a straight, big, long-scale dumb version of the 30 out of 6. What we would do is we would actually make it a hair longer and maybe not much, but we could make it whatever length and addition longer we want so long as we understand that we can't exceed with the bullet tip. From the base to the bullet tip, it has to be the same as the 5.56. but the advantage of making a gun like a cartridge like that is that we also wouldn't have to worry about feeding operations with the AR-15 magazine. So a straight case, for instance, an alloy discarding sable round would just be kick butt, take names. Now I'm talking about making a case for existing 5.56. I'm talking about making a, what would almost be 30 caliber or 30, it'll be 30 caliber probably, but it'd be 30 caliber straight case. Kind of like a long carbine round. But with all the advantages we have of the, you know, locking system, the cam, the reliability of the extractor and replaceability of the extractor, that case would probably be superior to anything else that we could go to. And the punkajunk rounds that are presently being proposed by the government, they're pretty crap. Mark, can you hear me? Looking at the performance of the latest bullet. There's a bunch of other things I want to touch on. It's technical. This is mostly, again, it's the idea of a straight case. Let's think about a, again, a 556 case cut straight. Now, one of the advantages of this is because you're going with a solid stock material, guys, in internal rifle round cases are typically tapered to go to the fire point for the primer. Now, you still would do that. You could actually do that with your tooling. You know, with the tooling you have and more out straight casing and then actually give it a mild taper towards the base for the last half inch. The big thing is that you would save materials. This sounds weird, but you would actually be saving materials. And one of the things to remember is your boring save. Most of your boring brass. See all those shavings and everything you've got there? They're going right back into the smelt. They're going to be recast into additional tube stock. Well, not tube stock, but solid rod stock to make more cases. Any brass that you have can be recast into whatever geometric shapes that you need or required for the task. And remember that the brass, it's reusable, reusable, reusable, there's no expiration date on it, it's made of elements. And again, we're not talking significant synthetics or anything here, we're talking a blend, remember it's a blend of metals that makes brass in the first place, okay? So another thing here to take and consider, I mentioned steel. With steel, you actually could even up pressures. uh... it'd be mild steel not going to be done all like you know drill rod or forty one forty chromoly still no no we're talking about base base metal stock that's what the russians do with the stuff that they make their cases out of it actually got to be mild steel and malleable or it could be worked the way that it is understand that remember you did the the malleability of the metals especially critical towards the old distortion of the metal in any especially with a number of different steps in shape set to be created free to come up with a rifle case in the first place so just something to think about and i'm not do all that much farther it's one of those things where we are we're already passing around the information on the ideas but uh... anybody could do this yet everybody should be thinking about work like this we need a thousand thousand small manufacturing site there already happen how they're going to block this band that do this whatever will at some point that they're gonna have brought become out for a month a mile for me to be shooting arrest we get into a war So, phase one, you're gonna fight with what you've got, and of course, overlapping, you're gonna strip the enemy dead and fight with what they brought. Now, the question I have for you is, They weren't working very well on my rifle. So I went home and I did the spamatics. I got my caliper out. And the cases were trimmed down 25 to 30 millimeters too short. So they weren't cycling at all. Now, was that? Okay, my question... They weren't likely... They should have been... Okay, first of all, they shouldn't have been that... You just said millimeters. It can't be millimeters. That would be shorter than the case. Yeah, yeah. Right. It's not around 1,000. I'm sorry. Yeah, it's 25 to 30,000. Too short. Now one of the reasons that the case spec might be different is remember that if you were to do an autopsy and you pull that bullet, it may or may not be a spitzer. Is it American Amel? Is it Lake City? No. It's HP, some of the hydro bird, blah blah blah. The other half of this is, remember, especially in rapid fire, if that was a shortened, slightly or mildly shortened case, uh... one of the reasons for that is when you do it long dated fliers are you know extended fliers as i've mentioned the brass literally superchargers the heat up it it cooks back to warms up faster the chamber even as high a slightly greater you see and what happens is the bread the brass stretches a little bit and if it's short one of the things that they may have got a compensate for that because again it's in a belt fed weapon they would prioritize it for that They know what its response will be in the fact that many gunners are you know, let's just say to let have a lead trigger finger, you know, yeah You shouldn't let up Otto. I know but it was excited. Yeah, and The thing is that what about here's the question? What about the other the ball ammo because it would have been four ball one tracer. Is that what it was? Yeah, it was supposed to be but it's not because I took it all I took every fourth out and there was no law no chemical behind the You know behind the bullet which is there's a big cavity behind each one of these bullets Okay, wait a minute back up. Okay, first of all, there should be okay. You had a belt. There's 200 rounds Yes, all were all 200 rounds tracer they sold it that way but I Mean, that's what it says on the package. But none of them are tracer. None of them. None of them are training None of them. Yeah, none of them. I can't see anything it Yeah, I heard like one. Did you try to dusk? Yes, I did. Yeah. First of all, it's not tracing. There's two reasons for that. Again, now you pulled a bullet. You said there was a cavity? Yeah. Oh yeah, big... Oh, okay. Here's what you need to do. If you want to do one more autopsy, just knock it. You're still going to be able to reload it with the primer. Take and pull another bullet. Well, okay, let's stop because you don't want to waste another bullet cartridge if you can help it. When you pulled the bullet on one, right? Oh, yeah. When you were looking inside, you said there was a deep cavity. Yes. How deep a cavity? How far did it go? It's almost a quarter inch. Okay, that shouldn't be that deep. So, here's the thing. What I would recommend, did you dump the powder in the case that you opened? Yeah, I mixed it with other powders that I had for... Wait, wait. Well, first of all, what I was going to recommend. Here's the thing. Okay. Well, when you dumped it, did you dump it? You kept one separate and say dump it on a tray or like a saucer? Get a white saucer. Yes, I did. And there was different mixtures with it. Okay, you know what happened. You know where I'm going. You know what happened, right? No. Okay. Remember we mentioned this about loading primer and also loading, in this case it's also true of loading the filament that goes into the bullet. It is in a paste or liquefied semi, very viscous, but liquefied form so that they can fully pack and consistently pack the projectile cavity. Now there's two ways that this stuff works. There's two ways that they load this and it sounds like this is the poor man's version. The poor man's version is you include what looks like it's very yellow, but it's not. It's a gum base. It's designed to keep all of the burnt material together and to allow once it's mixed to keep it mixed so it doesn't re-settle with some components drifting towards others, separating. When they insert this, because when they're doing this, the case is obviously point down, bucket up. okay bucket mouth up and they insert this the material is designed so that actually becomes glazed it actually when it dries as it dries which is happening almost immediately once it makes contact with air and good volume and so what happens is the material bonds to the edge of the inside of the jacketed case or lead because it should still be or should be some lead okay inside that projectile and uh... the other the other version of course when you do it the first way what happens at the cheapest way and if you're probably at war you should have somebody or you're expecting only such and such a shelf life for your amal uh... it's acceptable because you're going to be consuming a pretty quick now there are a couple disadvantages it's not it's more susceptible to environmental conditions which first of all most of the moisture so what they're more sophisticated though configuration typically is is you have the filament which is your primary burn and then you also have what is it which in the first case is still most should have which is a uh... a primal slash activating but a rich a retarded burn film of that lays in like a coin or like the layer of just a very like the thickness of uh... uh... sharpened pencil lead okay the end of the pencil it it's purely designed to cap off kind of like a bottle cap uh... the area but it's all combustible that's all the burnable otherwise it would be retired the process but it's also burning at a different rate now there's a reason for that when you pull the trigger of the bully activity activating charged caps off inside the chamber it slaps the back of the round that's enough to get that first filament burning and it's also a lesser material because it's slower burning it's still going to burn through fast It takes me longer to describe it every time you pull the trigger this is happening. But what happens is it doesn't activate in the barrel. By the time it leaves the barrel it also retards the burn so that remember you can't trace back to the muzzle. And at a certain point the first filament burns through the second filament activates and that's where you see your tracer. Now remember that your tracers, I don't know how far you were shooting, what was the range? Yeah, 100 yards. 100 yards. It should have activated. Okay, so here's another thing to watch for. If it's tired material, and you guys probably have seen this, if you've shot ammo you didn't even know was tracer, if you're firing it a berm 100, 200, or 300 yards out, you'll see rounds that sputter in, or even after they've started to burn, they'll just kind of, they'll bore in, but the filament's really tough, you know, really hot, and it'll sputter. coming out of the dirt. It's kind of cool, it looks like a little volcano. And it only lasts for a second, but you're really noticeable, especially in twilight or after sunset, when you're firing in darker conditions. The big thing here is that what's probably happened is, for whatever reason, quality of the product being the most common problem, is this material went dry or was green when it went in. and it broke contact and it was separated and may have completely granulated inside the projectile and it just drops into the powder charge. That's what it looks like, right? Because you said you had different colors? Yes, absolutely. I'm going with the car. So that's the problem. They were telling you what the, well it was tracer, keyword was. And here's the problem. Let me ask you something. Ah, here. what the brass really shiny uh... no negative no well okay that's good because here's one of the things that happen and by the way thank you for bringing us up to the danger warning danger will robinson guys never take your cases you'll loaded cases that you get better surplus never if they're if they're tired or discolored never never never and i think never quite that four times that night uh... put it in a tumbler or an agitator jiggler, never. Now it'll make the brass and bullet look real pretty. But what happens is you've pulverized and shaken to death whatever rods, cones, cylinders, donuts, whatever that powder was made up and how it made it burn at the speed that it was burning, what you just did is turned it into micro powder. And that's going to bring up your cup pressure. It's going to turn that, it totally changes the way that powder burns and how fast it burns. Okay? So never, never, never, never. If you're going to do that, if you thought you had to do that, here's what you can do. But here again, you got to remember that primers work in the same way everything else is. Now the primer's already a micro-fill in the material. If you ever look at primer material and how finely ground it is, what level of pixilation, It's very kind, it's well-corsed anyway, so that's what I'm not worried about. But remember, there's a prime of pocket. And if you throw a primered piece of brass into a tumbler, and you'll see it pull the bullet, dump the powder, the problem you've got still is that all that little junk that cleans all your stuff up is going to find the path of least resistance and build up in places where it can, and one of those is going to be your little primer channel going back to your primer. so that's the thing you gotta watch out for their your best bet if it's not pretty brass and i do this all the time the stuff we find everywhere if i got ammunition we open up a box and there's like your whole bunch of nine millimeter but it was stored someplace weird anything is discolored you pull it out of box and you put it off to the side and you shoot that at the range but first you wipe it off with a dry clean rag it'll shoot It'll cycle, but it's not gonna be stuff you wanna store long term because the brass and the tote that started discolored, which severely discolored. It's not gonna last forever, so you might as well shoot it now rather than wait till later. Shoot it when your next scheduled event is for shooting. Prioritize that. In this case, you still have a ball round. The bullets, did the bullets function? They just didn't flash, right? Yeah, they didn't find it in cycle, because it's semi-auto. That's because of the cross-contaminate. The other powder brought down the burn rate. Think about that. The tracer burns at a very different velocity. It's just burning. It's cooking. The powder is just needing. So that's where you got your... I'll try it again. Okay, thank you sir. So if you do have a house out here though and just pour it out into a white... I was taught, first, you know, it was part of this whole competition with when we were younger different things i was involved with her when you do the boy scout river how quickly cat competition see how quickly you could get a couple of water boiling and the idea is to do it in the shortest period time under a minute which you can know if you got everything going right you just everything set up when you put that cup on should take less than a minute with a minimal amount of flame you can use you know can be you can use whatever but the idea was to do it with with tender and small sticks to actually make just double a fire so you can get that water boiled and when you're done uh... you know it's mother the flame put it out whatever or put another container on there with some more how you know for more hot water and other guys camping cup now here's something to think about the stuff i mentioned here is expresso it's extremely fine grind there's an advantage to that in the field if you want to do cowboy coffee because what you do is you take up your you could take a couple of pictures with a canteen cup this is it does all i do it take a couple of pictures and drop a right in the canteen will be up to call coffee water go up got the boiling your canteen cup going you literally take a pinch drop it in and then take a pension drop it in and let the water you know what it you know dr has spread out what will happen is it's not going to bubble bubble perc it's just going to perk because that's what is going whatever it is actually your your pulling the uh... the juice out of the uh... you know ground mean but in this case what you're going to create cowboy coffee and one of the things about the expresso what's nice about this not to use very much and you know i don't like it's like parking light using like instant coffee we have better than the coffee because it tastes like real coffee is the coffee is good that's better than nothing but any of you are going to get stuck with a couple of the hanging out but uh... in this case this is a trick where you're not carrying very much material but it's the psychological aspect when you're given somebody a fresh cup of coffee and they smell it smells like it's supposed to they taste it guys that changes the demeanor of a lot of people so remember it's one of those field pick me up things and i've done this for decades but you know again the express all the thing about this is a perfect for that kind of work to you put this bag full bag of the ziploc bag good heavy one and uh... you've got it out in the field for long as you need to use it before bag itself holds up in the field because it's a foil mylar here that one for the pouches right here but i had a budget questions about that why would you mention that what it's not the only one of the whole bunch of their coffee this vacuum packed like this but the express so specifically for a couple of coffee in the field quick this this is right next to incident but better all the way around but some of you will call people are good for your or in some cases people are you know supposed to have coffee or tea uh... i understand that the for all the other people who who can have or want to have and remember again uh... you got wounded you got tired you got uh... in any other different conditions where you got a help somebody remember you might not use a side make this for somebody else but why not use it for myself here take this sebec relax work we got your back cover your cupboard what's going on okay uh... yeah See, this is a good way to settle a person, and it's not a cheap, junky cup of coffee.
