Not just food, but everything else from pins and needles to you name it, top to bottom. So we have now a shorter window, but at least we have an extension as this article points out. And that is it bought us more time. There's one thing, that's the one thing we got out of this week, and that is it has bought us more time. So what are you going to do with it? Now, number one, we're in harvest season, remember. Beans are going to be coming out of the field. You can buy direct from the farmer. Oats are going to be coming out of the field. Everything you can imagine, depending on where you are in the country, and each of you listening have different crops for different regions, different states. So in some areas where I'm talking, you're going to see rye, you're going to see barley, you're going to see all of the other grains coming in that are specific to your area or more commonly grown in the area because of climate and conditions. You're also going to see, like we are here in Michigan, apple production. Apples just went through the ceiling. We can't move fast enough to get most of what's out there, but we can move faster to get whatever we can. So the big thing is collect it, do what you can. If you can't make it all, find a second purpose for it. But in other words, don't waste it. There's a garden out there. It needs fertilizer. Maybe you got livestock. Whatever's left will get eaten. But get it collected and get it at least into pool, into some form. so that you have it and if you can build the time up, get more help, do what you can, everybody take their turn. Be creative. Get all the food dryers out there, get the canning jars out there, do what you can. If you have to freeze it because every, and I know the first you want to say freeze, everybody goes, Mark, it's not logical because, oh, you don't have any electricity. Yeah, but you know what's happening here right now? If you freeze it, and considering that we've now got about two months before the next window of stupidity hits, Well, the next window of stupidity or something before then takes off, we're now heading into the winter months. That will buy you a little bit of time with anything that's refrigerated or even fresh. So you have a... in one direction, the objective behind waging wars, this is what I was talking about years ago, the objective behind waging wars starting in a fall or a harvest season block is that they plan on it being a hot and heavy and a hard war, and they plan on starving you out. because the food is collected to central points and it is all in block form the train cars come in they carry it away and you go to a great elevator elevator elevator and all all of you in here here here is echo echo echo and a little mouse over in the corner nibbling on the last of the grain the little dribble it down at the bottom if you didn't get sucked in the machine you're not careful the mice that are on green mills are pretty savvy okay so he's probably going to at least get a few nibblets before it's all gone The bottom line is that again, we've got time but grab anything you can find on sale. If you see something that's marked down, trust me, use it. Date it and use it. Besides, 99% of what's marked down, let me ask you something. If you went and bought that on the shelf a week ago, would you have gone into your pantry, grabbed the can and thrown it away, or would you have kept it on the shelf and opened it whenever you felt like using it? Well, duh. So it dated on their shelf, it still has an indefinite shelf life, despite what everybody says. Unless it's rusted through or bulging and exploding, it's probably still going to be good. In other words, there are basic rules about canned goods that you can identify. Nice to come up with glass and jar goods. Pretty well you can see what's going on with them. Now even there, here's something most people don't think about. You know, a lot of the stuff that we have that gets older in the jars is still edible but most people don't want to think about eating it. It's not as pretty. Well, that's where other recipes come in where you dump the whole thing into something else, where you puree it or you chop it up or it gets locked into something else or you, even with old pickles, turn it into potato salad, or make it the flavoring. That way you don't lose your waste of material. Whatever it is, we're not going to be doing what we've been doing out of convenience for a long time because we're going back to why people were canning as extensively or reinvented canning again back in the 20s. So it didn't mean they weren't doing it already. People were. The difference is in the year 2013, fewer people have the brains and the wherewithal to figure out how. For those of you who are prepared, you need to be cranking out everything you can, filling up everything you can, doing whatever you can to continue to process. We've got a food dryer right now, mostly full of apples. Although I did put a few tomatoes on the top there, some small ones, just so they wouldn't go to waste and dried them out. And I've got about, oh, two bushels of apples in several containers now in dried fruit, in dried apples. Also, any other fruits you run into, slice them up, dry them up too. Any vegetables, slice them up, dry them up too. Don't slow down, don't hesitate, don't wait, because again, guys, the writing is on the wall. So we really, you know, again, for most of you, you pretty well have to give and you understand what's happening there. Food production for next year is also a critical issue and overlapping food production for this year. Now let me give you a little hint. Last year we did a little like intentional accidental experiment. We chopped off the cabbage heads. The cabbage plants were left in the garden. The base of the cabbage. We didn't pull it up. Don't do that either yourself. However, it got covered up with leaves and thatch and actually got covered over with a bucket. Each one of them did. And the next season, the next spring, this last spring, lo and behold, the plants survived the whole winter. We have a real winter in Michigan. Not only did it survive, but each one of them produced little heads of cabbage. One of them was a Brussels sprout thingy, and it produced little Brussels sprouts. Now, this from what was last year's plant. So again, with little or no maintenance, just little common sense. You got a lot of leaves in the yard. You got hay that you can pick up. You cover the plants with hay. Carrots can be left in the field. They can be left in the garden. Cover them up with hay before the snow flies. The carrots will be good through the winter. what you can do there is actually through the winter you brush away the snow with a broom, move the hay out of the way, take the carrots out you want, put the carrots back in place, brush a little bit of snow over top of it again. Wow, you've got an outdoor refrigerator. Now this is separate from all of your other techniques and methods to include root cellars for storing stuff like that guys. So they're all tricks at work. In other words, even the stuff you've got you might have to leave out in the garden. You don't have to consider it destroyed or lost. But you do have to perform a little work to get it done. A little maintenance to plug it in for the season. And that's something that, again, we hope we have planted a seed to start looking at the, how can I make that happen? One of the things I'm doing right now is making little greenhouses, greenhouse boxes, throwing out windows of people throughout. Each one is big enough for two, three, or four plants, if not six or seven like the biggest one I just made. Sit right over top of the existing plant. Later on here when the time comes, make a little roof for each one. The roof's gonna stay on there so that we've got a heated chamber through the night. They're not gonna frost. Lo and behold, I can extend the life of the plants. I wanna get a little fancier. I put a candle in there. I got a little heat in the chamber. It's enough to bring the temperature up through the night. And guess what? I could leave them in place for a period of time, but I can also put those in pots, bring them indoors.
