Summary
Mark Koernke discussed gas mask selection and maintenance on Weapons Wednesday, covering NATO filter standards (60mm vs 40mm), specific mask models including the M9, M10, and M17, filter loading and replacement procedures, and pre-filter techniques using cotton cloth to extend filter life. He also addressed a caller's question about O.J. Simpson allegedly selling a knife claimed to be used in his wife's murder, skeptically analyzing the authenticity and financial desperation behind such a sale, before transitioning to discussion of right-handed versus ambidextrous shooting positions with gas masks.

Be overcast from horizon to horizon again. A little bit of rain on and off all through the night, trickling rain, a lot of thunder and lightning. What's it been like in your neck of the woods? What's the date? What's jumping off the wall, sir? I know we've got a caller and we'll run into this here real quick. It is. Put that more on that later. Oh, there was one in the chamber, so one jumps out into the magazine and down into the magazine. Well, we can tell everybody it is weapons Wednesday. The perimeter is secure in there. Most certainly is plenty more. Where that came from. Jump in there, please. What, the three pack of the M10 gas test from Nate Lillipary? Tonight, I've walked replacement from this floor also, and tonight I'm accompanied by, trying to buy a couple of canister. Do they look like, for some reason, I'd like to know if you could give a recommendation on what the Lilliparina canister type is, and then how will I know when to change off the floor? Okay, first of all, there's a number of different models, as you know, that are out there. The Israelis have been out there for a long time. They are They're not Israeli, they're German made. The price has gone up quite a bit. The one thing about the first choice in a canister, a tank filter or whatever type is, you know, the size. Now there are three sizes. Actually, let's put it this way. There are three categories of sizes. Number one are the old NATO 60 millimeter. That includes all of the M9, the German GSG masks, the Canadian and British defense masks, the line masks, by the way, even to this day. even though they have the older 60 millimeter filter intake, actually offered a less stress on system. That was why they did that for volume of material. The millimeter is out there in force. There's still a lot of countries using them even as we speak. They haven't thrown them all out. If you look at videos of what's going on in the Middle East, M9s, you'll see German GSGs. You'll see everybody's mask in service. Take a look and seriously do a search for videos of operations there. But you will also see the Russian masks and you'll see the M10Ms, the M10s, M10Ms, M17s, the Chip Cheek as I call them, that's what they are, Chipmunk Cheek full of walnuts. In the canister, we again, some of the best are the M9 knockoffs right now. Those are in the 60 millimeter. That includes the M2 servie and I mentioned last night, just coming in the small quantities and the Model 61 finish mask, which by the way, all the Serb masks is confirmed, they're all made by Finland. countries don't their own, they buy from somebody. Now the next to the 40 millimeter tanks, the 40 millimeter masks, those are a lot of the Russian, and of course all the new American masks. The newer the masks, the more expensive, you know $20 and $30 or $15 or up into the hundreds. However, filter and you're looking at a lot of people are looking at combination of budget and adaptability, keyword. There's lots of 60 millimeter filters out there. The M9 is the dominant mask for the moment. It's an adult mask as far as I mean it works for children but here's one thing I would point out. The M9, the M17, the Schrader masks, all of the or even the newer 40 millimeter masks all type a web type rear for holding the mask in place. With civil defense, the Russians went the other way and they went with the possum or skull mask design so that there's no thinking about fixing. The idea behind a civil defense mask is that people have less experience. So you want to make it simple so they can put it on, tighten it up with a simple cinch system, as with the Russian mask, it covers the whole face. So that's a consideration. Who are you trying to outfit? In other words, is it somebody that's going to be, you know, has, is trained with your equipment or is this somebody that has little or no time? actually looking at probably personal preparedness and train and some good operations maybe. The webbing issue is not a problem because you should practice, practice, practice. Now one of the things that's an advantage about the M9, and I would point out that the US military went back to this, a gas mask filter on the M9 is side mounted. Now while you would think that they're all left hand sided and that everybody seems to be a right handed shooter because this allows for cheek weld on the right side of the mask, they actually made left a left hand shooter filtered system for the foreign masks used by weapons operators. So you can find lefty masks in the M9, which means that the filter will be on the opposite side of where most of them are, the majority of them are. The pluses for the M9 are filter location, inexpensive filters available, which you can buy from a number of different sources to include Gun Parts Corporation, which is old numeric arms. Gun Parts Corporation, Gun Parts Corporation, They have filters for the M9 or for any of the centimeter masks by the case in the country still for as long as they last. As far as resupplying goes, it's catch as catch can, but there are a number of companies that have millimeter filters on the shelf. Right now, that's probably the best choice for the money. You know, again, diversify and put a filter system on. Now, since you bought the Chipmunk Chic M10s, and those are good masks, nothing wrong with them all, I've got 10 of them sitting just to my left here that are already deployed, they're already set up, ready to roll. Explorer in the house here has so many masks. That's just standard. I could buy them for, you know, a song and a dance, and so I made sure they're used. You know, they're actually deployed. That way they can be employed. If you're looking for the idea of compatibility with other systems, the quickest, easiest of the 40 millimeters. You're going to go with a 40 millimeter, any of the German masks, All of the M15 combat masks, which are German made for the Israelis, the Israeli Civil Defense are low end in the higher up gap east. Now they're between 50 and 25, and they jump on those. It's a matter of if you're looking for something so that you can pull off your enemy material, the 40 millimeter would probably be your first best choice to go if you're looking from that direction. If you're looking at personal supply, and looking at budget, The M9 copies that are out there are probably the best choice right now because you can get more for later available plus. And main military, I don't know if he still has many of them left, 60 millimeter to 40 millimeter Canadian adapters are available, which means you have a big plus in that no matter which filter you show up with you can access. Now I said there were three types of tank filters because this is where you have to be careful. There is a third category. There are Belgian, which are an oddball size because they're pre-NATO and there are also American and private industrial masks that take tank filters but they're an independent design. American Mine Corporation made a lot of gas masks that use what basically is a hose type of their reason there's a lot of those floating around so be careful there. Confirm the size of the tank slash the filter. Number one. identify it. Now most of them are pretty straightforward. If it's a NATO US, it's a 40 millimeter filter system. So that's the only other thing you want to be aware of. Category 3, there's stuff floating out there. The old stuff like the Belgian masks were kind of crinkly. They came in in a small number. Some people bought them and you know we're not happy with them for obvious reasons. We warned about that in that there was a guy that did a website years ago. It's been around since what 2000? The idiot was purely pushing sails. He derided all of the other masks that were surplus. Now the idiot knew that all those masks that he was attacking were all masks that were in service. In fact, he was stupid and opened his mouth about the M10 and at the same time while he was printing the article, the Czech mercenaries we hired, the Czech government we hired him as a bunch of mercenary prostitutes, they were over there in desert dust too wearing that mask as our nuclear biological and chemical quote-unquote specialist. So you got to be careful with a lot of these characters. It's just like witch doctor science with global warming. There are people out there who have gotten into the community that really their only interest is marketing and they want to go absolute top end because of course they make better money on it. Selling it to you for $500 they probably bought it for $200. Just remember that. They're buying in quantity or they have a source and they have it drop shipped and they double the price. It's a 100% markup. So that's one of the other things taken into consideration with a lot of stuff like that. It doesn't mean there aren't people giving you good prices, but when you start getting up into the higher range, you're looking at regular retail. Surplus is surplus. If you do get the M9 copies, there are hoods available, everything available to make it American in configuration because pretty much to me, I think they, I don't think they made their own dies, I think they basically got ours back in the day. Sadly enough, I believe they just made an M9 and it was because they had the molds. Because the old ones went somewhere, they didn't cut them up. And American companies couldn't have them, but foreigners, oh, in a heartbeat. We've seen that for years now. So they're good maps. The other thing about a gas mask filter, you asked about that real quick, is loading. When you start to have difficulty drawing, what's probably happening is you're seeing what's called, it's a plastic process that takes place at the surface of the mask. It's where the mask is loading up with material. If it's thermalized in any way, if it's a little warm, especially when some stuff is as a chemical process goes, what it does is it loads up and bonds to the surface of the filter intentionally. It's part of a secondary solution with regard to retarding the amount of time the filters are good for with upper-end chemical agent. This is a part of the process. To prevent some of that, a piece of cheesecloth or a cotton can be used as a pre or advanced filter. It does work. In high concentrations, it's a cheap, easy solution. Beyond that, when you start to have difficulty or distress pulling your air, in other words, it's taking more work. Now with the adrenaline pump up, you may not notice this right away. Down the road you're going to be running out of adrenaline You'll find your back to normal levels with regard to pretty much everything you're doing even though the body will try to crank up more adrenaline to shove more into your system There's a downward trend in that if you repeat that process over and over again So you'll start to come to your senses and go man, it's gonna get a little tough to breathe here. Hell. Yeah, it's time to do a changeout How's everybody else feeling you do a spot check? That's what your squad leader does or your team leader or your family leader, whatever you do How's everybody breathing? Is it normal? I don't know. It's a little hard to breathe, Dad. OK, let me test this again. You do a volume check. Also, you can physically inspect and look at the end of the filter. You'll see loading that takes the particulate is a dust material. It builds up and will have a residue color, typically gray or black. Maybe a little variation in shape, plus smoky orange or smoky gray. gray brown combination, but whatever it is, if you start to physically see that inside the intake port of the filter, that is an optical way to identify loading. To prevent it, and as a test, one of the things to remember, if you use a soft material of cotton, whatever you got, cut it so that it's a circle, take a rubber band for the end of the filter intake, for the whole end of the filter. Now you cut it a little oversized. What you do is you're using the filter in the pre-head. This is a pre-filter. You'll notice if you look at the cloth, you will see build up. What you do is you release the rubber band, slide the cloth over a little bit to a new piece or a new area that's not loaded up, put the rubber band back in place, and that pre-filters more of the material. So less will be loading the primary surface of the mask. How's that for at least a... That's a compressed version of what is a longer class, but it's still the basic rule. If you look at... Waco rules of engagement. You will see some of the surviving equipment from the Davidians and you will see a piece of cheesecloth or cotton cloth that was actually over top of one of the Israeli masks that the Branch Davidians had. You will notice that there are four or five circles of dark matter And it's obvious that whoever was wearing that mask had changed that filter location, that pre-filter cloth a couple of times. Of course, they were murdered by the government in the long run anyway, but the case in point is that was a way to extend the life of the filter in what was a heavy chemical environment. So that's one of the solutions to prevent change out on the filters that much sooner. On your M10, remember that those little caps that are on your filter Those little caps that hold your filter into place, those are pre-filters. On your M10, those are pre-filters. Those caps, if they can be replaced separately from the primary filter, and that in fact is what they were for. Most of the troops were never instructed on this, and those that did get instruction never got replacement caps to have spares on hand. Only years and years ago, back in the 70s, when we were a little more serious about our combat effectiveness, and even there, the supply-cum-system was usually anal-retentive. Some units got what they needed, others did not. Typically, when you replace the filters on the M10 or the M17s, usually the recaps come with it, and those will be changed out at the same time. But, if you're in a battlefield environment, the filter, because of the pre-filters, may be the only thing that you change to conserve your filter reserves. and those little caps pop off and you pop a new one in. On the M10, you screw them in, which I think was actually a little better solution in many ways because threading is a lot easier to handle than trying to push something onto a gas mask in an environment. So something to think about there. So the M10 had some interesting features that were pluses. The tank filters, again, the M9s are reasonable enough in whatever variant, the M2 made for the Serbs. The finished models are very well made, or if you can run it in any US variant, that's fine. Sound good? Balance real good Mark, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. I've already thought about getting the ring adapters just to have the versatility and you gave me a good heads up on the cap. If you put the three-pilter cap, I'm going to have to get some of those. You'll find it... Search around. There's a couple companies that have those in masks. Some companies got the parts, some companies got the masks with the new filters, you know, for just one change out. So you'll find some companies are kind of, they think they're stuck with that. Well, if we're smart because they brought the price down, we can end up with a pre-cap, filters, and remember, because that's threaded, you could take a piece of subdued cotton cloth, like old t-shirt material, and even make a little bit of an elastic system to go over the pre-filtered caps on the M10s and then thread them into place. That would be a cheap solution that could be there in advance. Now you don't necessarily want to use white. Remember there are brown t-shirts out there or other colored t-shirts that could go to the cloth store and buy the material. But I would do it and you can buy it in a tactical color. There's no reason not to. That way it won't stand out when the time comes. The white kind of pops out. Two golf balls on your face are really kind of embarrassing on the battlefield. They might become another color after they become a target of opportunity. So just something to think about there. In the winter, not a problem. But in the other seasons, not so much. Sound good? Thank you very much. I just know it's good. Thank you very much. You and I have a fun day. Keep up the good work. Appreciate it. Very good. Thank you, sir. Thank you. Yes. And we are, we've got another caller. We can't go to break yet. We've got a caller. Another one's on standby. Who do we have? With that you mean? It is you, sir. Okay, well, it's Weapons Wednesday and I happen to think that there might be knife collectors in your audience and I want to share a news fight with you. O.J. Simpson has the knife for sale that he used to slaughter his wife and Ron Brown. This is not a joke. This is not a joke. This is an article that was published in The Daily Mail Reporter, which is a United Kingdom newspaper, first on the 17th of October, 2012. and then updated I guess later in the day. If you're a knife collector and you want to pay five million dollars for a German stiletto knife, all you have to do is search on the phrase United Kingdom Daily Mail and then look for some terms about OJ and it's got this gorgeous picture of a stiletto. It happens that nobody found a knife when OJ slaughtered his wife, but this newspaper, during the prosecution of the crime, the police in Los Angeles put up a stiletto knife that they thought would be approximately what O.J. used. So there's a picture there. If you want to buy it, it's $5 million. Now, the problem is I'm not knowing if the knife has been authenticated off of his wife's blood. So in other words, O.J. could be selling a fake knife. You know, he could be putting his signature on this and he'd say, this is the knife I killed my wife and I killed Ron Brown with. But I can't guarantee that there's blood on the weapon. So before you shell out $5 million, five is nice from OJ, you might want to ask him to run some sort of test for his wife's DNA and Ron's DNA on the blood. Because everybody knows OJ is in real death constraints now financially. So he could be pretending that this knife is the one he used to kill his wife with, but maybe it's not the real one. Maybe he really did throw it away. Because you know he used to bounce to airports in those commercials that he made. And so it's possible he dumped the knife while he was on his way to Chicago. So let me repeat that now for your listeners. The newspaper is the United Kingdom Daily Mail Reporter, published in the 17th of October. I don't know, somebody might have bought the knife. You know, maybe Donald Trump bought the knife as a souvenir of black, a black friend. Donald Trump and I might have bought it. But if he hasn't bought it, you've provided $5 million. There isn't, there's no contact phone number with the article, but I suggest that you get in touch with L. Sharpton or just call your, you know, maybe everybody listening to the micro-effect should call their local NAACP branch and just ask the NAACP, how do I buy this knife? I mean, who do I get in touch with though? Will you take a check? You know what I'm saying? Let's talk to the NAACP about this and let's find out how we can help them out. Okay, are there any questions? No, I would, there's a couple things when everybody hears this, I mean, number one, think about this, why would you keep a knife if you know it was involved in a crime? Hasn't anybody ever thought this through? It's like, oh, it's so priceless, I gotta keep it. What did it cost you? Oh, $29.95. What's your freedom worth? $29.95? You know, that's the one first thing that comes to mind, it's like, it's a chunk of metal. Guess what? They made lots of them. I can go buy more. Yeah, so again the other consideration is hey for $29.95 and a BS story and a signature I can make five million dollars. Think about it. Wouldn't you? This is a deal. Yeah, my dear. It was owned by the Queen of England. Queen Elizabeth herself. I got it from her while I was playing a card game. And I'll sell it to you for only five million dollars. And yes, it's got the official stamp of approval. Says Made in Kainay, right there on the side. Kainay is a special town outside of London, where they make only the finest of doodads for the Queen back a hundred years ago. Yes it is. Yesery, my dear. I would never plim-plam you. By the way, do you have a drink? We are at the bottom. You see what I mean? Anyway, call us there. Anything else you want to take off? Uh, no, I uh, but Mark, I think, I think your intuition is correct here. I think we're dealing with a, uh, a fake substitute and he's just trying to hustle five minutes. It's a hustler. Yeah, he's a, it's a hustler. Well, after all, like you said, he's desperate and there are people who are just excited about the ideas. They got to put your knife on their hands. Ooh. Well, I'll tell you, we'll let you go, sir. So, you know, thank you. Thank you, sir. I appreciate that. And we're going to go to break. We're at the bottom down. Yes, we are. It's rushing right up on it. So here we go. We'll be right back. I did, but now that I do, I'm not so sure. Sir? Johnson, I got a mission for you that could change your life. Oh, good, sir. It involves traveling halfway around the world, but that's as much as half a clue of where you're going and what you're gonna do when you get there. Situation normal, sir? Uh-huh. Well, I'll be leading this mission, Johnson, so I'll be telling you what to do. Yes, sir? That's right, Johnson, and I say first things first. Oh, good plan, sir. And when I say first is... Food. Always remember that, Johnson. Food is a big deal. Sir, my brother-in-law can guess a really good deal on some surplus MREs. Johnson, if you've got half a brain and that empty head of yours, you'll call the freeze-dry guy like I did. That food is better for you, it rehydrates faster, and it's good, Johnson. And it keeps for up to 30 years. Will we be gone that long, sir? I hope not. Now, get your supplies organized and meet me down at the pier at dawn on Sunday. We say it's gun-dry. Yes, sir. The thought line from for a right-handed or not, that's not an ambidextrous gas mask. You're gonna have that cheek weld and the mask is, you know, interlament. The greatly masked, it is flopping around on the end of that hose and you don't really want to go in one place like this. You know, some of them wrap around grips and some grips go for the right job. And you know, it might even be that five shot man here or there. So the owner's hand is really, really good. purpose. These examples are target. At target 22 you're going to be doing the same thing over and over and over again and it really doesn't matter you're never going to shoot if you're right-handed with your left hand from the bipod or sandbag. I'm sorry it always comes up to your right shoulder you never have to. Again the right tool for the really neat thing. Some of these in particular the late model of Mark you know they're nothing but metal. I know about wooden stock you're seeing all of that man that metal on metal it can secure what I know all about that nothing but metal and old days when we had wooden stocks in our kinds of things but again that's the only thing to be for that like that it's a pretty cool thing you know that highly carved your right hand going to feel really awkward we hammer on this we you know what we're talking about here the side y'all bring us offing ability right up to the corner on the paper like a key see you're coming to I'm gonna run over to the right wall of running obviously into the your right handed you run to that where you right handers feel the fire come out that way.
