Mark Koernke discussed defensive preparedness strategies, including the use of leveling lasers as perimeter detection devices in open field scenarios. He and co-host Don explored night vision technology applications and conducted detailed analysis of armored vehicle vulnerabilities, focusing on soft targets such as optics, communications equipment, and vision blocks rather than direct armor penetration. The show covered tactical principles for engaging mechanized infantry and tanks, emphasizing combined arms tactics, weapon system prioritization, and the importance of accurate long-range marksmanship. A caller from Indiana contributed discussion on infantry support coordination and urban defense tactics involving paint-based countermeasures against vehicle optics.

They may have that one unit and they need money because things are tight. Well, people have bought brand new multi-banks and they're still in the brand new box with the brand new Styrofoam and in the brand new plastic and they've never been out. Nice. Use that equipment before? Well, no. For sure that it's working. No. Well, if you haven't tested the equipment, they haven't checked to see if it's performance is up to stuff, how do you know that it will work when you plug it in? Now we don't just say plug it in because let's add something to that. You have to have a place, we understand that. You have to have a place for the load to go. You send something out where there's supposed to be an antenna wire and you don't have a place for that energy to go, it has some place. And that's going to damage your radio, no matter what radio it is. You've got something to dump that load into in the way of an antenna and, you know, at the very least for listening, plug the system in and use it. I want to hear about somebody saying, oh, my God, I have had actually has happened. $3,000 machine and somebody said plug it in to see if it lights up. Then somebody plugged in the microphone and somebody enough to cost a couple hundred dollars in repair. See the problem is when you have more expensive equipment, it means it's more expensive to fix. Remember you gotta have some place for the signal to go with your radio gear. They have a number of different with connectors and everything so they actually dump below they dump the uh... the transmission they whatever the doing with it uh... signal wise uh... i into a line into a system you know what antenna that's already hooked up and ready to go that's how you test anyway you're going to have a test bench in your case you just need to set everything up you need to monitor you do not have to keep the mike if you're monitoring you can listen passively Well, there's a chance to do just that and see how the natives operate when it comes to shortwave radio transmitting and receiving. And here's how you do it. The Liberty Net will be from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. plus, and it's on 3950 regular shortwave. 3950 regular shortwave. We got rain already. Little bit of rain, not much. Well, we got some more than a little bit of rain because we got I think it all fell here. Yeah, we got some water to have held up, do some other roof repair work, not repair, just replacement. But I can't complain. Everything else the last several days is plugged in properly. And we've gotten a lot of other work done. We have a couple things before we get to the break here this morning, something I wanted to touch on. Now, by the way, there was a question and you answered it for anybody else that was through the spike. Last of the night vision devices was sold, wasn't it? I still have access to them. Oh yeah, no, I just, there was somebody, did Don get that other one moved? That was what they were worried about. They wanted to make sure you got that one. We appreciate the person that responded and want to say thank you on the air. And so that's all taken care of. That'll be the last of those that Don used, took your system, make sure those were fixed. The companies are good about providing. If anybody wants to get hold of you, you can't do it right now. But if anybody wants to get hold of you about night vision, who do they call again? Well, you know, that anticipation notice a tell online here. You guys, that's like a. a pop bottle, but give me a call you guys. Three, one. Give me a call, you know, I'll do my best to beat 800 numbers. Price is gonna be worth the call. I wonder how they can get away with it. Corn sugar! Wait a minute, doing that corn stuff? Albert, shut up. You're right. But, you know, hey, we're running right up to the break for you guys. Like our hair is on fire we're going to come back into this Thursday morning. I will confirm this. We have a lot of people who are listening who have had a chance to look at the night vision series that we've put together. You know again Ethan did the editing, you did the filming. Everybody pitched in from different directions to make this happen. So, if we can, and I know our guys listen in the chat room, some of them have, or actually many of them already have copies of the Night Vision DVD. So, one of the subjects that I do want to touch on today is, what did you think? And feedback, what is it that you might want to see added to or part of the next video on Night Vision because we are going to expand and do some little project work. I've got the tools put together. Don's got the night vision technology. Last night I was experimenting with the leveling laser, what I call a laser mine. Now this is something that most people don't think about. How many people have used a leveling laser? You ever seen one of those Don? Put it in the middle of the room and you know, what does it do? Cuts a line all the way around the outside of the room that's completely flat. Guaranteed it'll be perfect, right? Well how does that work? Basically, to be quite honest guys, the way that that little leveling laser works is the way that a weapons was originally designed to work out of an APC. Most people don't remember this. Back in the 60s it was, can we take a weapons laser and mount it on an armored vehicle? They said, well yeah, as a matter of fact, the problem is that the power pick for that little laser, go inside of the APC. Yeah, there was enough room for the driver, there was enough room for the gunner slash what normally would be the commander's station. And that was it. Everything else on board and inside that whole M113 that Genet Gavin APC was battery packed, the port, you know, hardware to support the laser. But the laser, everybody expects it, you know, like massive mounts. Guys, the whole fixture that was exposed was about the size of your fist. Little bigger but not much. and was an articulated reflector that actually pushed the laser out to wherever they wanted to move it. So it was more like looking at a micro version of what was called a chaperale launcher. It had a gimbal so that it could turn full 360 degrees and could also articulate up and down, elevate and depress. Now, needless to say, we don't want to be burning off all soft parts of the equipment, so the laser actually had a analog program system that would avoid objects that were on the vehicle. And it could be extended a little bit too, so it could fire over the horizon beyond the vehicle. But it was only like a periscope. Not even that. It wasn't as big as a periscope on a submarine. It was more like about a three-inch pipe. Now, the leveling laser does the same thing, but in a micro version. In fact, it's actually where the guy got the idea for this was a little laser project pad that was done years ago. that you could do as a kit. It was like a laser light show toy, Don. But he thought, wait a minute, laser is a straight line, a flat surface. Level it out, watch your little bubbles, set it in place, and you can cut a line that's perfect. Now if you can't figure that out, you shouldn't be in carpentry or anything for that matter, having to do with the physical world. Here's the thing, now take the same idea, take the same leveling laser, Put it out in the middle of, say, a field or an area like the plow field I have here to my south right now that's many, many, many, many, many acres. That laser light will travel the whole distance of all of that field, guys. If I take that laser leveler and put it at a three-foot height, or a two-foot height, two and a half, three feet, three feet, take it big, and I lay it in position. and I do a quick touch on it and I check to see is it hitting the tree line? Yep. Is it hitting it about the same place? Yep. Okay, look, it's hitting the fence poles, it's hitting the building, it's hitting the tree line, it's hitting the pole. Alright, I can run it and then shut it off. Now guys, consider this. If somebody is moving through that area, because it's not hard to defend that area, it's pretty open, pretty obvious. But if somebody moves through that area, and let's say every randomly, every 11 minutes or 4 minutes and 1 minute and 3 minutes and 5 minutes, I set that thing off. What happens to anything that's standing in the field, Don? Oh, it gets, it interrupts. You won't see a line behind it if you're looking at it at an angle. It'll splash it with a laser light, won't it? Yeah. A line. It'll stop right, depending on how far away and what type of... Here's the thing, it'll be a solid line too, but here's the thing. Now, Don, with my naked eye, I can see a red line on that target. Oh, I mean, uh, uh, thing. Whatever. And let's say there's one, two, three, four, five targets in the field and I, and again, they get splashed with this light. Now there's another way I can do this. I can put a motion sensor. Oh, here's where Mark can really be mean. Mark can put a motion sensor that washing over an area as something moves to within the sensor range of that, of that mine. What happens is it sets off the laser and it runs. Now Don, even if it was just first generation night vision, what would that laser look like in that night vision device? What's neat is these little leveling laser guys are so ridiculous and it would literally cover 10, 12, 14 acre areas. Now it can be have grassy because the bad guys or somebody traveling through an area like that will figure that you're not awake and that you wouldn't be, you know, again, you have so much to cover. But what if you again have one or two people that are doing nothing but observing the kill zone areas that you've established? And rather than, now here's the, for those of you who are old enough, remember we used a different trick on this guys. You put a line through the grass or you put a line in the trees on a path and when they would walk through and hit the trip white eight feet above the target area you have an illumination flare and the moment they trip it the trip wipes two techniques are used. One was explosion, those beats of flash Well, that's okay. Well, you know, the idea is not to be too close to the objective, but because the other side typically will be sloppy. They figure they're still within a, you know, their outside would be considered to be the contact perimeter. The other is a flare. The flare illuminates the kill zone. Well, guess what? These laser leveling systems become a laser mine. They serve the same purpose. If somebody is covering that area, when the laser mine goes off, anything that is painted that isn't where it's supposed to be gets shot. And Don, your night vision, even first generation, enhances that battlefield that much more clearly, doesn't it? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Lasers and night visioners go hand in hand. We've addressed that before. We'll talk more about it when we come back. We'll be right back. or opinions expressed in interviews or commentary are those of the individual speaking and do not necessarily represent the views or opinions of the micro effect broadcasting network, its parent, or any of its affiliates or employees. This is... We talk about that movie, they live every now and then. You know what? He's trying to get his buddy losing in through there. The guy you have to twist, or Mark, you know that, that. With a laser, and we've talked about this for so many different ways. If you encountered in the daytime ability and the number of people under attack, oh, and the guy lifts to find that particular satellite dish on him, he has to find the issue. So, something like that appears on the battlefield. That's the thing that's going to be, if you've got that range of that portable thing on top of the Humvee, about a thousand years. range of your average 50, you know, my 50 doesn't go subsonic, but will be pretty accurate. And that attempt that's sticking out there certainly is a vulnerable fit. It might even be something as small as the 308 mark. And you mag a 223 into it and render the threat. Well, most important on this is something that from world policy, unlike everybody else, was everybody engages the tank. Now, we've always, we always use movies as reference and to a degree, it's also as supposed to show attitude. Remember in Saving Ryan's privates, the very end where he's got the wind knocked out of him and he's leaning up against the one chunk of debris and he pulls out his 45 and the tiger's coming at him and he's bringing his hand back down and he's actually trying to aim. What's he aiming for guys? He's aiming for vision blocks. Everybody, because you're not going to stop a tank with a fill in the blank. Well, actually, yeah, you may. Or the tritian. Armored vehicles are man-made. This is one of the most common mistakes I mean, tanks are fun to hunt, and eventually once you get over the idea, they're trying to kill you. Well, everybody that I know of are gone now would say, you know, you get past the fear, you do your job, and it's amazing how much you get done. He goes, that was the attitude. Eventually he just figured, hey, I'm dead anyway, get the job done right. Well, amazingly enough, when you focused on the task rather than, you know, being, you know, scared, it got done a lot easier, and every one of the men that I talked to that survived the war stated that that's what he did. Now, tanks, everybody, if you had a carbine, What's car being going to do? Well, you aim for the antenna mounts, you aim for everything that's soft on the vehicle. Why? Because you're disrupting the operator. Now today they don't have vision slits like they did back then. But everybody aims and focuses. Now they don't try to stop the tank. Look at it this way, it's like running through real thick molasses. You describe it. Everything that's going, that's hitting the vehicle is like fingers reaching out and just pulling at it. Is it going to do damage to the armor? No, no, not really. is it going to do damage to soft parts well optics and communications equipment have to poke out somewhere even weapon systems you can't shoot my gun mark in that going back yeah webnet gondri always down the barrel if you do it right you know you got a chance maybe when he pulled the gun by the way on that note i will point something out all that was in the all tank guns uh... in fact during world war two tank crews don't just throw ammunition wrong guys who the tank round You've got to remember that most every round in a tank is sensitive because it's a machine. People think projectile, they think it's the big bullet. No, it's not a big bullet. Well, it is a big bullet, but it's a big high-tech bullet. The round in its static form is more sensitive to small arms fire than even the vehicle, than say radio equipment. The round through, for instance, at that point in time, you'd be absolutely correct on, the shape charges charges and everything were not made out of armor. They had to be, you know, they had to be able to be frangible so that they would become fragmentation. They actually were quite either brittle or soft and because of this most anything would penetrate it. A 30-06 especially zipping down the barrel going ping, ping, ping. If they had any clue that that's what had happened and by the way that guy was a sniper so keep it inside that 70 millimeter or so, forgive me, 75 millimeter or 88 millimeter pipe light. And if it's a desperation act, it'd be the last thing you do, but it might not be. You have to deal with them, that's right. So the point is, in modern days, and this is, guys, I want you to go to YouTube, now Mark always, you know, and Don give you, we always give you homework assignments, okay? Go to YouTube and watch all the videos on armor, on equipment, on modern tanks. I don't care who it is, Russian, American, Norwegian, French, Chinese. You're going to notice something on new tanks that you'll see as you watch the changes in the development of armor. You'll notice that the stereoscopic bubbles on the side of the turrets have disappeared. Now what I mean by that is those are rangefinders. On either side of the M60 or the M48 you have these little bubble teats that you can spot that are actually the rangefinding system and was actually the targeting system. You have the conventional optic system on many. you have something that initially when these things first came on at the laugh about this they stippled out with propaganda stippling you know like uh... pixelating now you know i cut like uh... digital camouflage okay well it was always on the top of the first right in front of the commanders cupola guess what you know what that is we call it today we call that a bread box that bread box has everything I don't have to knock the whole tank out to make it a blind dinosaur. I don't even have to shoot most of the vehicle. If all fire is direct down to the bread box, and by the way, remember guys, accuracy in all your equipment is increased dramatically. Any tank weapons have improved, both in range and accuracy, as far as speed, velocity is the big 10. Velocity and energy applied is the issue. But your .50 caliber rifles, even your .30 caliber weapons, everything scores and damages the bread box. especially since it's got to be able to see things. So it's looking forward, remember? Now because of this, let me give you an example. If the bread box is knocked out on an Abrams, do you know what they do? They've got a set of literally iron sights that they're supposed to sit on the tube, the main gun tube, and the commander exposing himself to fire. Gee, if the bread box was hit and it hurt, what do you think happens when somebody's noggin' gets plugged with a bunch of rounds? It's softer. Yeah, they die faster than that bread box does. But that iron sight is what you're supposed to line your targets up with. Now do you think you're going to be super accurate with that? Wow, but all of a sudden we've got this super specialized vehicle that they show you leaping and flying and almost doing somersaults and barrel rolls. Try one of them on the run. Yeah, try doing that. All of a sudden the world changes, does it? Yep. Now you're like a World War I. There you go. If you want to get it, you have to come to it. The same is true. Remember, you take your weapon systems and you prioritize them. them to understanding what it takes to knock out the aggressor. If he's got body armor, aim for the groin. If he's got a weapon system that is a spray and pray gun, accuracy, and hit him at greater range. If he only has a range of 150 yards, doesn't it imply that perhaps you should be making your maximum effective range, 300 yards? Yeah. 2 and 300 yards. And by the way, we're not the military. We have optics, we carry what we want, and we can reach greater ranges. If you can hit a moose or an elk or a mule deer across the valley out there in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and he's even on the move in some cases, and you watch through the optics, does that bullet even travel sometimes? pushes the atmosphere and you watch it smack that mule deer and that mule deer goes down at 800 to 1,000 yards, please tell me how a guy wearing 60 to 80 pounds of armoring gear is going to be a hard target for you. I'm a little confused. That mule deer, even on a ridge that you wouldn't walk, he can run. Come on, people. You know, human moose, especially black uniform human moose, are not hard to hit. hit and move, that's the whole point. And as you move up the scale, and again, shoot the gun. People have a hard time with that. Shoot the gun. What? Shoot the gun. Why? It's all soft working parts. Let me give you an example. Even if I didn't hit the artillery tube proper, guys, if you hit the recovery and recoil system, you don't want to be near that thing when she gets touched off. Oh, I'm telling you, the nightmare of what can happen, oopsie. isn't a real happy camper situation for anybody. So right up the scale, every device, it's just a matter of we don't think about this properly. It's a tank, yes it is, but it's got working parts and working parts break. Well, I'll tell you what, before we get any farther, because we're getting close to the top, we've got a caller, who do we have? This is Arnie in Indiana. Jump in there, sir. You guys surrounding him just keep down an intake stack, one on the hull. Absolutely, but let's point this out. Here's one of the things. Combined arms effort. Absolutely. Mechanized infantry are going to be trying to stay with the armor. But there's one thing you may have paid attention to with regard to arrogance like in Iraq. How many people remember those scenes in Baghdad? off where you see those Abrams and those drivers were allowed to play with their toys. You remember the one, I saw this and I thought, man, when he got back to the shop, there's a whole bunch of guys in wrenches wanting to beat on his hind end. And Abrams was sitting there on the intersection, another one pulls up and does a zero G turn in motion. And literally he skids the hind end around. It looked really impressive. But what they didn't show you if he got close, those pads flying off of the track left and right. especially on concrete. Now, the first rule is this, just what I said a moment ago. That infantry that's supporting them are now mostly carrying M4s. They have a hundred yard less range effective than the standard M16. On top of that, they are typically carrying ammunition that is intentionally underpowered because of subcontracting failures. So if I'm carrying with C, my whole unit's carrying M14s, F and FALs, and I've got a couple of captured MAG 58s, the M60 might, you know, in-law brought back from Vietnam with about a million parts and a garage full of ammo. And I've got one or two .250-coupled rifles. There's nothing that that infantry can do to save what I'm going to do to that tank. It's the most important thing. The combined arms team will be slaughtered simply because of, again, their beam counters. gun mounted in a turret. When they roll these tanks down the alley on... You know what I would point out? Good thing you pointed this out real quick. I want to get this in before we lose the moment here. Guys, coal-based paint. Nobody thinks about this. Epoxy paint. If you're in an urban area and we think three-dimensionally, we got into this conversation years ago and everybody shuddered. If you take and use glass containers and people go, oh no, it's half cocktails. you can literally reach out drop down whatever you want. Do you realize what oil-based paint would do to the optics and red box area and then jellify your fuel and throw that in right behind it? The paint itself, I mean it goes water-based paint but oil-based paint does not come off and in an armor situation where you're gonna start gooping, you're just throwing stuff at them, you're throwing junk, it's cumulative. You're not going to get very many one-shot kills. If you're lucky, you're going to get a shot that's going to be that premium shot once in a blue moon. Otherwise, when you're knocking on armor, it's attrition. And that's the mistake. People watch these movies. It's like when people have a rollover of Volkswagen or you rollover a motorcycle and they explode. It's like that's not how the world works or otherwise we'd all be incinerated long ago and nobody trusts us with a gas nozzle at the gas station. That's right. How many stair pairs on board? I'm not popping them out then. They're going to run out. Right, exactly. They only carry about two per vision and typically their priority for the driver. That is when you need to... Exactly when in doubt, because they can't drive a tank without being a battlefield. The target is the pumpkin, camouflage pumpkin. It's going to be pretty soon jack-o'-lantern. They had a really hard side and a lot of them don't want to anyway because they've seen what hanks were their lock down and they don't get out. So unfortunately then the other problem is commanders who like to keep themselves exposed and eventually, well they went through a lot of commanders because first they got shot and then they had to clean out that commander's cupola which is usually flattered with a whole bunch of body parts. And so there again, people think it's their purpose. That's Hollywood promoting propaganda. Armor can be defeated but you brought up a good point. Don't forget it's not going to typically run on their own. It's part of a combined arms team. But the combined arms team has been retarded. It's been pulled back as far as its resources and technology, despite what they say, and it can only carry so much. So we have to be able to get farther, get harder, penetrate deeper. That's the key. Better, heavier weapons are the key to holding. And then you get in behind them and you make the fuel truck stop running. That's right. Let the stuff they bring with them work for you. Thank you, sir. We are the D.O.P. Frankly speaking, it's coming up next. We're at the top of the hour here.
