years of teaching and teacher training experience, Dr. Taryn Gushta has written a book called The War on Children, How Pop Culture and Public Schools Put Our Kids at Risk. This book exposes the dangers that modern American public education pose to children's moral, intellectual, and spiritual development. She takes the reader on a tour from the earliest days of colonization to 20th century court cases and social changes to programs adopted by the Bush, Clinton, and Obama administrations. As Dr. Gushta explains, the earliest American schools were formed to teach children to read the Bible and to learn about the Christian faith. In the 1840s, Horace Mann, a secularist and Unitarian, started a movement that eventually remade America's schools into the compulsory government-funded institutions we have today, where they teach students to be global citizens and secularists whose highest virtue is tolerance. This book enables parents to understand and fight against the further damage that will be done if national standards, universal preschool, and United Nations curricula are enacted. Yet those are the explicit goals of politicians and administrators now in office. Dr. Gushta hopes to sound the alarm so parents and churches will rise up and defend their children from these attacks on their hearts and minds. She calls on parents and the church to join together to take their responsibility to shield kids from a predatory culture.
